I never thought that I would find myself writing a blog post like this, but here it is. I wanted to document what I fear will come to pass as Trump considers his choice:
- Do whatever it takes to maintain the power of the presidency; or,
- Oversee a fair election and transfer of power to a new president and face justice.
I firmly believe that Trump is a sociopath: someone who exhibits all the clinical features of a narcissistic personality disorder and most of the clinical features of an antisocial personality disorder. Hoping that a sociopath will do the right thing –in this case, choosing the welfare of the country over his own wants—is to engage in magical thinking.
I, therefore, expect that there is a good chance the following things will happen in the next few months:
- Trump will use the military via the insurrection act to take over large population centers and hold (or loosely hold) that power throughout 2020.
- Trump will, citing the pandemic or civil unrest, seek to either postpone or cancel the 2020 election; he will rely upon the military occupation to enforce this violation of civil rights.
- Trump will attempt to charge Joe Biden with a crime.
I also expect something like 30% of the electorate is so psychologically damaged by years of consuming white identity politics[1] that they will gleefully support these measures because they can no longer differentiate actual fascism from patriotism. What will America look like in 6 months? Biden said that this will be a fight for the soul of America and I think he’s right.
