“Tranny” is a hot-button word. Ticked off Trannies With Knifes was bad, but the gay director loves the term “tranny” (as did others in gay media). Just when gay actor Neil Patrick Harris gets through apologizing for publicly using this term, Ru Paul (another gay actor) says that she loves the term.

So, what’s the truth about the word’s origin and its context?
