Michigan Womyn’s Music Fest is Evil

I have a story that will be coming out sometime this month and it comes from several hours of interviews I did with members of the Lesbian Avengers. They told me about what happened to their group back in 1999, when a mob of violent Michigan Womyn’s Music Fest (MWMF) TERFs held a trans kid against her will and threatened to murder her.

I’ve already released some of the interview in a MWMF post I did for TheTERFs.com. The entire interview is very difficult for me to listen to. I mean, after the physical and mental mob assault happened, one of the MWMF womyn tried to get the trans kid to put out… directly after they had psychologically gang raped her in public.

When an activist friend of mine raised this issue with MWMF*, the Fest claimed that trans people are lying about what happened, that their victim was mentally ill and drunk. They said that what they did to her was for her own good.

What Happened

In 1999, Camp Trans was largely organized by the Lesbian Avengers. The group bought a 16 year old trans girl to the MWMF ticket booth and informed them that they were from Camp Trans and that they had a trans youth with them. While the MWMF sold everyone in the group tickets, the moment the group of Avengers entered the gates, TERFs began trailing the 16 year old trans kid shouting, “MAN ON THE LAND!” This continued until the group turned into a mob that had surrounded the youth, screaming at her until MWMF security moved everyone to a tent where the trans youth was made to stand in front of an enormous group of TERFs who spent the next 2 hours berating her.  One adult openly threatened the life of the youth without consequence. The youth was marched to the gates of the festival and expelled.

[Lesbian Avenger] S: About 10 TERFs were waiting for us when we came in. The whole ‘MAN ON THE LAND!’ started as soon as we walked in. I mean, at the time, we’re kids, we’re teenagers and these are all adults. I mean, when I think about it now, it was just so fucked up. We were trying to give out t-shirts and stickers about being inclusive. But, it was getting bad.

[trans girl in the group] K: A huge crowd of yelling people formed around us and I started crying at that point. It got so loud that Nomy Lamm, who was performing there as part of Sister Spit, came over and stood up for us… The crowd and me were walked over to a tent area. The way that it worked was that there was a queue of people who were going to get to say whatever they wanted to say. I remember, specifically, one woman looking right at me and telling me that I needed to leave the Land as soon as possible because she had a knife and didn’t know if she would be able to control herself if I was around her.

Cristan Williams: WHAT? How did people react to that death threat?

K: Because of the way they were queuing, as soon as one person stopped speaking, another would start, so nobody said or did anything about the death threat. At that point, I checked out. I was first I was sobbing and [B] was holding my face close to hers, telling me that it would be over soon, but then I just checked out.

S: The moderator did nothing. It was just a mud-slinging, hatred pouring out. It was just like one by one by one being like, ‘You’re a rapist! You’re raping the Land! You’re destroying womanhood! I don’t know what I’m going to do to you!’ – it was just violent, hatred, and I know that most of it was geared at [K]. I was up there being attacked, but I wasn’t getting the brunt of it. This went on for at least two hours.  At least 30 people were allowed to speak at us, but there were around 75 under the tent, and if you included the people around the tent who were watching and listening, well over 100.

How, exactly, did MWMF know that this kid was “mentally ill”? I spent hours doing interviews for this story and I’ve found no evidence to support this fact assertion. Moreover, the kid wasn’t “intoxicated,” the kid was terrified.  At one point K was telling me that her friend held her face in her hands saying, “Shhh… It will be okay. It will all be over soon. Just look at me. Don’t look at them.” Now, imagine that after all of this, one of them tries to get you to put out. This was psychological rape. Any adult who took part in harming this kid in this way should – at the very least – have the decency to be ashamed… and the truth is that I know that they aren’t.

A fucking mob of adults did this to a trans kid. Can you imagine being a kid and being made to stand in front of a mob of TERFs, yelling at you, pouring out hate at you, making no bones about how despised and disgusting they think you are and then being told that at least one of them has a weapon and wants to murder you? And then imagine that nobody cared to do anything about a fucking adult, threatening to murder a trans kid in public. Imagine if you were 16 and this happened to you. Now that the truth is finally coming out, imagine that your abuser said that you’re crazy, you must have been drunk and that you deserved it.

Before the full story comes out, I invite the MWMF to clarify how they obtained this kid’s mental health records and if they don’t have the kid’s medical records, I’d like them to explain why they’ve publicly claimed that this kid was mentally ill. I invite them to publish the evidence to support any of their claims. I invite them to issue a statement and explain to everyone why the kid deserved what the she got.

I’d love to see that MWMF has to say, especially since the 16 year old was a straight edge teetotaler who has never been diagnosed as being “mentally ill”.

I hope to have the whole story published on the TransAdvocate this month.

PS:

TERFs plan to harass HRC tomorrow (Friday, 10/3/14) because HRC joined the National Black Justice Coalition, the Gay & Lesbian Task Force, the Nation Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR), the TransAdvocate (and many other social justice groups) in asking the MichFest stop their decades of trans discrimination:

So, apparently HRC owes MWMF an apology for asking that they stop discriminating against trans people.

Irony: These MWMF TERFs are appropriating the “Amazon” culture to promote their bigotry. The Amazons are based on the Scythians, a TRANS-INCLUSIVE culture.

Note: When I use “psychological rape” in this post, I’m talking about being forcibly positioned to accept a psychological violation that puts one in fear of their life. Moreover, I’ve used this term because the trauma was sexualized by a MWMF womyn when the kid was most vulnerable.

Update: *While the above twitter account exists to promote MWMF and organizing aspects of MWMF, after this post went up, this account now claims that it isn’t associated with MWMF.

Update 2: In addition to now claiming no affiliation with MWMF, the twitter account is now saying that they were referring to some other instance involving a trans kid.

498 Years Ago This Month

On this month, 498 years ago:

Vasco discovered that the village of Quarequa was stained by the foulest vice. The king’s brother and a number of other courtiers were dressed as women, and according to the accounts of the neighbours shared the same passion. Vasco ordered forty of them to be torn to pieces by dogs. The Spaniards commonly used their dogs in fighting against these naked people, and the dogs threw themselves upon them as though they were wild boars or timid deer. The Spaniards found these animals as ready to share their dangers as did the people of Colophon or Castabara, who trained cohorts of dogs for war; for the dogs were always in the lead and never shirked a fight.

This from Pietro Martire D’Anghiera’s account of Vasco Nunez de Balboa massacre of Native American trans folk which took place October 1513.

Advice to Right Wing Fearmongers

So, the cancer that is the American right wing has infected Canada. An “institute” has begun a misinformation campaign that claims that kids can catch transsexualism from books. According to this “institute,” if kids learn about “intersexed” and two-spirited Native people, it will trigger a psychological break that will inexorably lead to them turning into transsexuals – possibly on the spot. Here’s their television ad:

So, here’s my advice:

  • IF you’re going to lie to scare parents into agreeing with your absurd ideas;
  • IF you’re going to create a fake “institute” to give your lies gravitas;
  • IF you’re going to marginalize real trans kids by making them a subject of distain on television;
  • THEN, you probably want to use privacy settings in your public WHOIS information:

Because spreading lies like this can have real-world consequences.

And yes, I’ve already called. This is McVety’s real info. You can email, call and/or fax him if you like.

How stupid does one have to be to do something like this when you’re running a hate campaign? How about creationist stupid? Yup, McVety is a creationist who thinks Evolution = Nazism.

CreationistFamilyGuy

Apparently this “institute” is McVety’s office at the college he works for. I wonder if this college knows that it is part of a political campaign and that McVety has set up his own “institute” on their campus. Also, I wonder if this college receives any public funding and if this would be problematic for the college if regulators were to discover that public funds were being used in a right-wing misinformation campaign?

Oh, and by the way. I wonder if McVety even knows about the Canadian teen who was just bashed for being trans while his anti-trans misinformation campaign was in full swing? I wonder is McVety even considered how putting anti-trans lies out into the public plays out in real life?

The REAL “Response” in Houston, Texas to Hate, Bigotry and Murder

While Perry and his 3 ring circus of anti-queer hate is gearing up to congratulate each other for passing the buck to Yahweh Elohim in what he’s calling “The Response”, the GLBT community in Houston came together to remember those we have lost to hate and to dedicate a small garden as a lasting place of reflection. This effort was sparked to life as a reaction to a recent murder that took place in Houston. A young gay man named Aaron Scheerhoorn had been stabbed as was running from his attacker. Upon seeing a nightclub, he ran to the club’s entrance seeking help. The doorman turned him away… whereupon Aaron’s attacker pushed him down and in front of dozens of onlookers, commenced to stabbing Aaron over and over again… the onlookers did absolutely nothing to stop the attack and allowed the murderer to escape without hindrance.

This place of remembrance is significant to me because 1/3 of those remembered that night were transgender. I’ve known more than one trans person who fell victim to hated. It helps me knowing that others will at least remember their names. I hope is place of remembrance might inspire others to consider the price the innocent pays for our culture’s need to cling to hate.

I will be forever grateful to the organizers of this event. I knew some of these victims… It was so incredibly moving to hear folks explicitly acknowledge their suffering. While Garnet Coleman was speaking, I was moved to tears.

On top of Myra, I also knew Kendrick “Cinnamon” Perry. She had come to our organization seeking shelter because no emergency homeless shelter would take a transwoman. Unfortunately, our economy had taken a hit after 9/11 and the program we had to house these folks had to close due to lack of funding. The night the Board was meeting at the GLBT Center to officially end this housing program, grabbed my hand and Cinnamon asked me for shelter… and I had to tell her that we were unable to take her because the program had closed it’s doors. It was just 2 weeks later that, while walking down Lovett Blvd, someone drove by and shot her in the head.

She would have lived had she been able to have access to shelter. Had a foundation been willing to fund a transgender shelter program at the time or if their had been more support, the shelter would have been open for her. I remember that during the days, we would be down at the shelter and on the weekends, we were in the bars collecting change to keep the program going. For years I blamed myself. Her murder affected me in a way that felt just like a punch to the solar plexus. I felt utterly defeated when her life was cut short.

While I certainly know that hate – from the murder itself to the bigotry that wouldn’t allow her access to a shelter – was to blame for her death, it certainly haunts me to this day still.

This was the first ceremony I’ve attended in which she was publicly remembered. It was profoundly moving to me. Thank you… to each and every one of the organizers of this event… Thank you.

Warning! Trans attacker is on the streets!

WARNING!!

The man who bashed Lance Reyna, well known gay transman, during the week of Pride is out of jail and on the streets!

During the vicious attack which sent Lance to the hospital, his attacker called Lance a “queer” and used a knife in the attack. At the time, Lance was wearing pride gear. After the brutal attack was finished, the attacker took Lance’s wallet.

Since the attacker won’t fess up to knowing that Lance was part of the GLBT community, he won’t be held accountable under State or Federal hate crime statutes and the case will be prosecuted as a simple assault. As it stands now, he’s out of jail and may get off with a slap on the wrist and some community service because this is his, “first time offence” (according to the DA’s office)!

Missing letter key to finding woman’s murderer

HOUSTON (KTRK) — One letter could solve the 8-month-old murder of Myra Ical. But the two-page letter is missing one crucial clue that police need to catch the killer.
Houston police homicide investigators say at this point, there is one person they think may have murdered Ical back in January. But an anonymous letter holds the key to a possible arrest. The letter gives a first name for the possible murderer, but because of the sensitivity of the investigation, Eyewitness News is not releasing that name.
The key to an unsolved murder came in the mail in June, addressed to Cristan Williams, the executive director of the Transgender Foundation in Montrose.
“This person was very much afraid to come forward with this information so they wrote an anonymous tip letter,” Williams said.
On January 18, the body of a transgendered woman was found here in the 4300 block of Garrott, next to the Southwest Freeway. Police won’t say how Ical died, but eight months later, the case is not cold.
“Most cold cases are not considered cold until every lead has been exhausted, so there is some things that we’re working on,” HPD Homicide Sgt. Bobby Roberts said.
One of those things is a letter written by someone who signed it only as “Matthew.” He described two chance meetings with a man. The first happened in February at the Guava Lamp Bar on Waugh.
“He seems to be a very strange person anyway,” Matthew wrote, say the man tried to pick up his friend.
Matthew says he overheard the man talking about leaving the country because of what he had done.
The second meeting happened at South Beach Nightclub in Montrose in May.
“He was again under the influence but remembered my friend and began making a pass again,” the letter writer says. He also says a passerby told him the man was violent.
Police say Matthew is detailed enough and credible enough that they need to find him.
“It could assist us in getting warrants for DNA evidence or whatever it is we need to help this case and get us to a conclusion,” Roberts said.
The man described in Matthew’s letter is the only person police are looking at for Ical’s murder right now.
And back at the Transgender Foundation, Williams says Matthew is the key to preventing more murders.
“Unless they come forward, someone else can be the next victim,” she said.
Crime Stoppers is offering up to $5,000 for information leading that leads to the arrest of a suspect. Anyone with tips is asked to call the hot line at 713-222-8477.
